Brum BiFest Volunteering Details

Staffing the registration desk

  • What skills do you need?
    • Ability to handle taking £5 and £3 entry fees and giving small amounts of change and a receipt on request or stamping attenders' hands..
    • Being welcoming to people registering, giving them appropriate BiFest info booklets.
    • Point people at the programme if they're unsure of what's happening when they arrive.
    • Be able to call an organiser to provide assistance if anything complex comes up - contact info will be provided.
  • Who do we need and when?
    • Two people at a time to do slots of an hour at a time on the desk any time between 10:30 and 20:30.
    • Rota will be staggered so one desk person changes every half an hour.
    • If you're nervous or shy we can rota you for a quieter desk time or with a friendly experienced desk volunteer.
    • We'll almost certainly have an opportunity for people to sign up for desk volunteering at BiFest itself, so it's never too late to sign up.

Set-up and decoration of the Warehouse

  • Putting up A4 and A3 posters with blutac/pins onto appropriate walls and room dividers.
  • Folding or cutting up various papery things (string, scissors, tape,)

Food

  • We may be providing picnic food during BiFest and would like some volunteers to help set this up.
  • Watching a hot water urn and getting it refilled when it becomes empty (handling hot water).
  • Carrying food between ABplus's kitchen and the Warehouse area of the venue.
  • Cleaning up after food has been eaten, filling and emptying a dishwasher and putting items back in cupboards.
  • It is likely you will need to be physically able to do this.

Take-down and clearup of the Warehouse

  • Moving furniture and chairs back to original places
  • Removing all our posters etc as neatly as possible.
  • Tidying up food remains, possibly vacuuming or sweeping venue space

Moving furniture (tables, chairs and room dividers)

  • What skills do you need?
    • You will need to be able to lift tables with another volunteer or chairs by yourself without causing yourself pain or damage.
    • We won't ask you to lift excessive amounts, mostly shared moving of room dividers, tables and chairs.
  • When will we need furniture moved?
    • If you are available on Fri 20th Nov in the evening your help may be very helpful.
    • Throughout the day at BiFest we may need things moving and will shout out for volunteers.
    • After 19:30 as BiFest closes up and ends we will need help clearing The Warehouse back to the state we found it.

  • If anyone has a current first aid qualification, we would be keen to hear from you if you could act as a volunteer first aider to BiFest attenders - please get in touch on info@brum.bifest.org
